Aurora Fisheries is seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to join the engineering leadership team aboard FV Takapo, a modern deep-sea factory trawler operating throughout New Zealand waters.
This is a rare opportunity for a highly capable marine engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and working with advanced vessel technology, automation systems and remote diagnostics support.
Essential Qualifications
MEC 4, MEC 2, or 1st DTE qualification
Demonstrated experience as a marine engineer on a modern commercial fishing vessel, offshore vessel, factory ship, or similar operation
Strong knowledge of diesel propulsion, hydraulics, refrigeration, electrical systems, automation and vessel monitoring systems
Proven fault-finding and troubleshooting capability across mechanical, electrical and control systems
Strong commitment to safety, compliance and engineering best practice
About the Role
As Chief Engineer, you will be responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of all vessel engineering systems. You will lead the engineering team and work closely with the Master, Factory Manager and shore-based technical specialists to maximise vessel performance and minimise downtime.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading and developing the vessel engineering team
Managing planned maintenance and repair programmes
Overseeing propulsion, power generation, hydraulic, refrigeration and factory systems
Diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues
Coordinating contractors and specialist service providers
Supporting Maritime NZ, DNV and survey requirements
Maintaining high standards of safety, compliance and engineering housekeeping
